Frequently Asked Questions

What mental health disorders do you treat?

I treat patients struggling with common mental health issues such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression, as well as individuals who are interested in taking a proactive approach to their mental health. I use Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS). These include cognitive behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, narrative therapy, and motivational interviewing. I also may draw upon Lifestyle Medicine, which uses the power of daily habits and practices to enhance physical and mental wellbeing.

What medical certifications do you have?

I’m an Australian-trained General Practitioner with Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. I am also Board Certified in Lifestyle Medicine. In addition to this, I continue to partake in regular professional development in various aspects of healthcare so I can offer my patients a progressive and evidence-based approach.

Can I use my Medicare rebates for your mental health treatment services?

Yes, you can. If you’ve been diagnosed with a mental disorder, your GP will give you a mental health treatment plan, making you eligible for Medicare rebates for mental health services. You can apply your rebates to our one-hour mental health treatment sessions. In addition, consultations with me regarding a health related issue are eligible for a Medicare rebate.

Will you replace my regular GP?

When you come to me for mental health services or coaching, you’ll keep your current GP. Your doctor may refer you to my practice specifically for mental health counselling, and I will refer you to them for any physical ailments you may be experiencing. If they have referred you for a Mental Health Care Plan, I will also keep them up to date on our progress.

What are the benefits of coaching?

With each coaching session, you’ll gain more self-awareness, allowing you to act with purpose in all areas of your life. In an organisational setting, coaching can lead to increased levels of motivation, greater empathy, and a culture that engenders collaboration and innovation.

According to the International Coach Federation (ICF, 2009)

  • 80% of people who receive coaching report increased self confidence
  • 70% benefit from increased work performance, relationship and more effective communication skills
  • 86% of companies report they recouped their investment on coaching and more

How does one-on-one coaching work?

Before your first session, I offer a free phone consultation – this gives us the chance to chat and assess if we are the right fit for each other. The call lasts from 15 to 20 minutes.

After this initial call, we can set up a time for your first session. I offer both traditional Personalised Coaching online or in-person, as well as Walk and Talk Sessions in South East Melbourne and Bayside. Sessions are ongoing, and I’ll often offer techniques for you to use in between sessions. Sessions are 60 minutes in length.

What should I expect from my coaching session?

Coaching is so powerful because it offers a platform for self-reflection and deeper awareness. Working with me, you’ll have a safe space to express yourself and to discover who you are from a different light.

How can corporate coaching help my organisation?

I provide tailored corporate coaching services that can enhance your work culture, bring out the best of your employees, and give your organisation a competitive advantage. I’m available for speaking, mentoring, and training and offer a health focus, arming your staff with tools and knowledge that can help to enhance wellness, mental health, and resilience

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

Coaching focuses on the present. Through understanding our behaviours, habits, and perspectives, as well as gaining clarity over our present circumstances, we can shape our experience of reality, and therefore, better shape our future. Coaching is unique in that it is participatory, which is why it often elicits positive results quickly. Coaches often have professional backgrounds.

Therapy is a different yet equally valuable tool for personal growth. However, the focus is on looking at how past experiences have led to our present circumstances and how we experience our current reality. As a qualified therapist with a medical background, I provide both services to my patients. In fact, depending on what you need during each session, I may focus on mental health wellbeing during some sessions, and draw upon coaching, motivational therapy, and Lifestyle Medicine modalities during others.

Can I see you as my doctor as well as my life coach?

My primary goal is to help you optimise your wellbeing, so even through my personal coaching services, I draw upon Lifestyle Medicine and my medical background to support you on your journey. If you’re seeing me for mental health support, I will likely use a combination of Focussed Physiological Services (FPS) and Lifestyle Medicine. Ultimately, I am a medical doctor who brings all the benefits of the coaching experience – the motivation, clarity, and guidance – to help my patients work toward their ideal selves in all areas of life.

How much does coaching cost?

My fee is $275 (excl. GST) per hour.

Are coaching fees tax deductible?

To find out if my fees can be counted as a tax deduction, please consult with your accountant.

Do I get a Medicare or a private health rebate?

No, the Medicare rebate is only available for mental health services.
